Chapter Sixteen

“Have you lost your mind? You went to a tattoo parlor?”

Leroy didn’t bother to answer her. His heart was still racing from the near-miss at the place. Who would have figured that a cop would be in there getting his own tattoo? Damn, but it had felt good to fool the law like that. He’d been lying there with his shirt off while the artist, named Luke, had been working on his tat. It was perfect—red heart around his newly pierced nipple with Ramona’s name spelled out over the top. When the cop had walked in, Leroy had almost jumped off the table and ruined everything. But he had nerves of steel. Hell, yes, he did. So he stayed there, under the needle, with a cop just feet away.

“Calm down, baby. Nothing happened. I keep telling you, this disguise is golden.” Leroy pulled her in and tried to give her a kiss to distract her. She wasn’t having it. “He never even looked my way.”

“You told them my name.” She shoved away from him. “Damn it, Lee, how many times do I have to tell you that we can’t afford to be connected?”

“I’m getting sick of this.” He stalked to the kitchen and pulled a beer out of the fridge. At least she’d remembered to bring him a new case of Lone Star. If he didn’t know better, he’d think she was planning to ditch him. Time to remind her of how things stood. He took a deep drink, then wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

“You’re sick of this? What about me? I’m out there having to act like everything is cool while you sit on your ass drinking beer and watching baseball. I took all the risk—” She gasped when he grabbed her arm and flung her onto the couch.

“Oh? You took all the risk? Who almost died in a shootout with the cops, and then was hauled off to jail?”

He wasn’t getting through to her. She just sat there, watching him and rubbing her arm.

“I hate being locked up, Ramona. Hate it.” It was a weakness that he didn’t expose to just anyone, and he probably shouldn’t be telling her this now. Ramona might use it against him later. “I had to kill a cop to get out of that hellhole. You know what will happen to me if I get caught now?”

“You loved killing him. Don’t deny it.” She raised her chin, daring him to say otherwise.

“Yeah, maybe I did. Because I’m good with a knife, and don’t you forget it.” Leroy stood over her. He was so mad he was shaking, beer sloshing out of the can and spilling onto her. She sat still for it because she was smart enough to know you didn’t cross him when he was this pissed. “Then there was that asshole Isaac Crane. Do you think you did me a favor, setting me up to listen to that nutcase for days and weeks on end while he plotted his get-rich scheme that fell the hell apart?” He took a drink, daring her to get up.
